This is the year we launch the Nukkumatti Project. We have lots of ideas and it is difficult to concentrate to anything else. Here is a short story about how it all began.
In June 2017 I was with my daughter Sannimaria in Midnight Sun Filmfestival in Sodankylä. We queued to Aki Kaurismäki movie and had plenty of time to talk. I said Sanni there is writing competition of lappish fairytales and the deadline is soon. We had had just a conversation about midnight sun and how it affects to people who are not used to it. Then Sanni said Nukkumatti must be very annoyed of constant light too. It certainly makes Nukkumatti's job very difficult. What a great topic of a story for children!
For those who has no idea of Nukkumatti, he is a small elf or fairy in Scandinavian folklore. He sprinkles sand or dust into the eyes of the child at night to bring on sleep and dreams.
While queueing to movie we brainstormed rough plan of the story. The structure is very traditional. Nukkumatti has a problem and seeks help for three different friends and the last one will give him great solution. We made such a good plan in the queue the actual writing was quite easy and quick process.
I asked my family to read the story and asked feedback. The best one was from Oona (11 years old) who had read it to her little brother. Oona told that his brother fell asleep right away! :)
After few changes I send the story of Nukkumatti ja yötön yö (Nukkumatti and the Midnight Sun) to the writing competion in the end of June 2017.
