Our first book, Nukkumatti and the Midnight Sun, was illustrated by Sannimaria's friend Carolina Morera. Right from the start, we agreed that Carolina would also illustrate all of our forthcoming NUKULUKU stories, that’s how much we loved her illustration style. It has the kind of lighthearted, humorous and colourful air that we try to express in the text as well.
Carolina is not a psychic either, so we shared our insights and ideas about the characters and locations. Our tooth fairy would not be able to indulge in tulle skirts, ballet slippers and sequins, because such equipment would not work well in Lapland. Our tooth fairy needs a tactical uniform and decent shoes.
We asked Carolina to bring out the colours of the Lappish ruska, as the story is set to autumn. After moving to Finland from Colombia, Carolina has become very familiar with the Lappish landscape, but we still provided her with a catalogue of ideas with ruska landscapes, a picture of a typical Finnish house, location photos of Lappish villages and Siberian jays. Together we are still pondering the proportions of the different characters: what is the size of the tooth fairy relative to the Hammaspeikko? How about to Nukkumatti, Snowy Owl or Mrs Bear?
Other than the abovementioned we gave Carolina free hands, as the previous book showed that she is at exactly the same wavelength as we writers. Not only does Carolina's artwork support the story, but it also takes it to a whole new level. Without Carolina’s illustrations, our text would be like a birthday cake without filling or decorations.
